Pope Leo XIV, 71, underwent surgery on Tuesday, October 13, at Rome's Gemelli Hospital to remove a cancerous tumor from his right lung.
Doctors stated that the pontiff's recovery is progressing normally and that he can now carry out normal activities with full independence. Further tests will be conducted to determine if the cancer had spread.
On Friday, the Vatican released photos showing the Pope celebrating Mass unaided at the hospital. The Vatican also shared images of get-well notes sent to the Pope by patients in the hospital's pediatric oncology ward. Meanwhile, Vatican media personnel were seen laying cables for a possible live broadcast.
The Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV will be discharged from the hospital on Saturday. He is expected to lead prayers for pilgrims in St Peter's Square from his Vatican apartment on Sunday, October 18.
