Representatives from the world’s largest economies have unanimously agreed to adopt guidelines proposed by the United States calling for a lighter touch toward governing artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. At a G20 ministerial meeting, the U.S. pressed members to avoid creating new rules for AI, emphasizing industry growth over regulatory constraints.
U.S. officials and company executives stated that strict rules could strangle an industry capable of curing diseases and supercharging global growth. These goals largely align with the thinking of the world’s biggest artificial intelligence companies, nearly all of which are American.
The agreement represents a win for the Trump administration and Silicon Valley. Meanwhile, Canada plans to advocate for balancing AI innovation with public trust and safety.
