Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa appointed Kurdish leader Mazloum Abdi as a presidential advisor on Friday. The appointment reflects a rapprochement between the two longtime civil war adversaries.
The move follows the dissolution of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which Abdi previously commanded. The force was dissolved three days prior to the appointment as part of an integration agreement with Damascus.
By integrating the force into the Syrian army, the SDF has ended a decade of independent existence. Washington has described the move as genuine integration.
