US President Donald Trump held separate phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday, coinciding with the US president's 80th birthday. The leaders discussed the war in Ukraine and shared their perceptions on how the conflict, which has lasted more than four years, could be ended.
The Kremlin described the conversation between President Putin and President Trump as friendly and frank. During the call, Trump informed Putin that the war in Ukraine needs to end. Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy indicated that he and Trump would engage in further discussions during the upcoming G7 summit.
Despite these conversations, US-brokered talks between Kyiv and Moscow to end the war remain stalled. The leaders also discussed Iran, with Trump focusing on that conflict and stating that a US agreement with Tehran is close.
