Record number of Rohingya refugees dead and missing at sea in 2025, UNHCR says

The United Nations refugee agency has reported that 2025 is the deadliest year on record for Rohingya refugees attempting sea crossings in the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal. Nearly 900 individuals were reported missing or dead, representing more than one in seven of the estimated 6,500 who attempted the journey.

These refugees primarily depart from huge camps in Bangladesh, where more than 1 million people who fled Myanmar's Rakhine state live in squalid conditions.

Additionally, hundreds of migrants from Bangladesh, including Rohingya refugees, are feared dead after a boat bound for Malaysia overturned. The UN refugee agency has warned that these conditions are creating an unmarked graveyard for thousands of desperate Rohingya refugees in South Asia.
