The escalation comes as US President Donald Trump and Iran move toward finalizing a preliminary peace deal to end a three-month war and open the Strait of Hormuz. Trump called for all sides to stand down and urged Israel to stop attacking Lebanon to preserve the agreement, which he hoped would be signed on Sunday. Trump rebuked the strikes as a disproportionate response and angrily blamed Israel for delaying the deal.
While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed the strikes, other Israeli officials expressed disappointment with the peace deal, noting that Israel had been sidelined in negotiations led by Pakistan and others. Meanwhile, Iran threatened a military response, insisting that any ceasefire must include an end to Israeli attacks in Lebanon. Iranian speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and the chief negotiator stated there was no point in continuing talks, citing a US failure to honor commitments.
The conflict, which was reignited by the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran over three months ago, has left the US and Israel at odds over ongoing operations in Lebanon. Despite the increased tension, a UN spokesperson reported that there had been fewer clashes on June 15.
