NATO leaders gathered in Ankara for two days to discuss security in an increasingly perilous world, focusing on Iran, Ukraine, and ties with Donald Trump. As a parting gift, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan surprised the guests by presenting them with engraved vintage revolvers.
The firearms, known as Gümüşay, are described as the first revolver-type handgun produced in Turkey. Each weapon was presented in a wooden display box and accompanied by live ammunition and a cleaning kit, with the revolvers engraved with the names of the recipients.
The highly unusual gift, first mentioned by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, created diplomatic and logistical challenges. Security teams were left to determine how to handle the firearms and ammunition. Consequently, several leaders stated that the weapons would be donated to museums or decommissioned.
