Mexico, the United States, and Canada have activated a joint epidemiological surveillance protocol for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The move comes in response to an Ebola outbreak in Central and East Africa.

The agreement among the World Cup hosts to counter the Ebola threat follows the World Health Organisation’s declaration of an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo as a global public health emergency of international concern.

The spread of Ebola has prompted governments to step up travel-related containment measures. As part of these efforts, Canada has banned residents from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan from entering the country for 90 days, starting on Wednesday.
