Brazilian regulators have ordered Discord Inc. to suspend livestreaming in the South American country. The move comes as authorities scrutinize how the platform protects young users and seek to step up protections for minors on popular social media platforms.
The order follows a case described as a "real-life horror show" that has triggered national outrage. Investigators say a 13-year-old girl was encouraged to self-harm and take her own life during a recent Discord livestream.
Regulators stated that Discord failed to protect minors from content related to violence, self-harm, and suicide.
Discord said it is "thoughtfully reviewing" the order from Brazil's data protection agency and remains "committed to user safety."
