Qatar PM visits Tehran for mediation and Hormuz talks to revive US-Iran talks

Qatar's prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, visited Tehran on Thursday for diplomatic talks with Iranian officials. The visit is an effort to relaunch diplomacy as the US and Iran trade recriminations over Washington's promise to increase economic pressure by targeting Tehran's trade partners with sanctions.

The meetings come as the US-Israel war on Iran nears its sixth month with no diplomatic breakthrough in sight. Regional tensions remain high and direct US-Iran talks remain stalled, prompting Qatar to step up mediation efforts focused on de-escalation, dialogue, and restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Currently, a US naval blockade is choking oil supplies to Iran amid a domestic shortfall.

Sheikh Mohammed has been a key mediator in the conflict, even as his country has blamed Tehran for hundreds of missile and drone attacks. Qatar previously played a direct role in securing a June ceasefire that briefly led to a cessation of hostilities.

These talks follow a week of intense diplomacy in Iran, which included separate meetings with officials from Oman and Pakistan seeking ways to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Officials are now reviewing efforts being made to reduce war escalation and create appropriate conditions for dialogue.
