The conflict between the United States and Iran has escalated over the strategic Strait of Hormuz following the collapse of a ceasefire. For seven consecutive nights, the US military has launched strikes targeting Iranian military capabilities, including logistics facilities, railways, energy sites, and bridges. These attacks, carried out at the direction of President Donald Trump, included the collapse of a tower at a key Iranian port to pressure Tehran into reopening the strait.
In response, Iran has launched a wave of retaliatory missile and drone attacks against US military sites and allies across the Middle East. Targets included bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait, as well as sites in Qatar, Oman, and a special operations command center in Syria. In Kuwait, Iranian strikes hit the Ali Al Salem airbase and damaged power and water desalination plants, which provide about 90 percent of the country's drinking water. These attacks also led to the suspension of flights at the Kuwait airport. Tehran has suspended its commitments under an interim deal and told Yemen's Houthis to be ready to disrupt Red Sea shipping.
The fighting has resulted in significant casualties and economic instability. Two US service members were killed and another is missing following an Iranian attack in Jordan. Since the war began, 16 US service members have been killed and over 430 wounded, while Iran reported at least three dead. The US continues to enforce a naval blockade as the intensifying hostilities push oil prices higher and raise fears of an all-out war. Despite the expansion of targets and the growing conflict, the White House insists the door to diplomacy remains open.
