US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping recently held a summit to discuss matters ranging from the stalled war in Iran to trade and the rising challenges posed by AI. While analysts said the summit produced no major breakthroughs, the leaders established working groups and steps toward greater cooperation to help prevent disputes from escalating.
The two superpowers agreed to set up a bilateral communication channel for AI incidents and established a US-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue to exchange views on the risks and benefits of the technology. This comes amid concerns about AI's potential to develop out of control. According to the White House, the two leaders agreed to use the term "super intelligence" rather than "artificial intelligence" to describe the technology.
The clearest breakthrough occurred in trade, with both sides agreeing to tariff cuts on $30 billion of goods in each direction. They also agreed to continue cooperating through a Board of Trade focused on selected bilateral issues. Furthermore, the United States and China pledged to boost coordination on military matters and accelerate work on military crisis communications.
