An avalanche struck a team of ten international climbers on Broad Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range on Thursday. The group, which included an American climber, was led by the renowned Nepal-born, British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja.

The army is leading rescue efforts to locate the missing mountaineers. Officials reported on Friday that search crews have found four bodies, and it has been confirmed that one American climber is dead.

Nirmal Purja is an influential climber who set a world record in 2019. He became the first person to climb all 14 of the world's highest peaks surpassing the 8,000 metre mark in just 189 days.
