Guy Scott, a former Zambian Vice President and briefly acting president, has died at the age of 82. The Zambian government announced on Wednesday that Scott passed away at his farm in the capital, Lusaka.
In 2014, Scott served as president for three months following the death of Michael Sata. This made him Africa's first white head of state in more than two decades, the first since South Africa's F.W. de Klerk left office after that country's first all-race elections in 1994. He was also the first white vice president and president of Zambia since its independence from British colonial rule in 1964.
Of Scottish and English heritage, Scott was first elected to Zambia's Parliament in 1991. He later served as the minister of agriculture, food and fisheries before becoming vice president in 2011.
Current Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has accorded Scott a state funeral, although the date has not yet been announced.
