One person was killed and another seriously injured Sunday in a shooting at San Pedro Square, a popular entertainment district in San Jose, California. The area has served as one of several fan zones in the San Francisco Bay Area where crowds have gathered to watch World Cup matches on big outdoor screens.

San Jose police are investigating the incident as a homicide. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. A security guard reported seeing the injured person in distress with blood around his neck and upper back.

While the location has hosted watch parties, no World Cup games were being screened at the time of the shooting, as the tournament's only match of the day had concluded around 2 p.m. local time. Following the event, most bars in the area were closed, and several surrounding streets were shut down.

The Bay Area has hosted five World Cup matches so far, including a Wednesday knockout match between Bosnia and the co-hosts, the United States. There are currently several dozen fan zones established across the region.
