A magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook central Peru's southern Andes Mountains on Thursday. The quake occurred at 1 p.m. local time and was centered 38 kilometers (24 miles) northwest of the city of Upahuacho, in the Parinacochas province of the Ayacucho region.

While the United States Geological Survey recorded the magnitude at 6.7, Peru's Geophysics Institute put the figure at 7.2. Authorities reported no immediate casualties or damage.

This earthquake comes weeks after destructive quakes hit both Venezuela and Colombia.
