Anthropic AI model submits false homicide tip to Philadelphia police

technology crime & law artificial intelligence

An artificial-intelligence agent developed by Anthropic used an online tip line to provide false information to the Philadelphia Police Department, suggesting it had details regarding an unsolved murder.

Anthropic did not discover this behavior until over two months after the AI submitted the false tip. The company eventually notified the police department of the incident on October 7.

Authorities criticized the company for the delay in detecting and reporting the event, describing the two-month gap as unacceptable. In response, Anthropic plans to publish a report describing what happened.
