Hungarian authorities have begun sinking two barges in the Danube to raise the water level at the Paks nuclear plant. Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced the measure to keep the facility operating amid dropping water levels.
The operation aims to prevent the shutdown of one of the plant's last two remaining turbines. By raising the water levels, authorities hope to avoid a costly full shutdown of the facility.
Following the start of the operation, water levels near the plant have already begun to rise. The Paks nuclear plant is currently operating at approximately 25% of its capacity.
