Rex Heuermann, a former Manhattan architect and the Gilgo Beach serial killer, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without parole. Judge Timothy Mazzei handed down the maximum sentence allowed by New York law after Heuermann pleaded guilty to the murders of seven women and admitted to one more.
Heuermann methodically planned and carried out a killing spree that spanned at least 17 years on Long Island. While living a secret double life as a quiet architect who lived with his family and commuted to Manhattan for work, he committed these crimes. His arrest in 2023 came after a discarded pizza crust linked him to the string of unsolved murders.
During the sentencing, victims' families shared grueling impact statements regarding the effect of the murders on their children and relatives. Danielle Mack, sister of Valerie Mack, stated that the killer does not have the humanity to feel remorse. Cheers erupted in the courtroom as Heuermann was finally made to pay for his crimes.
