England defender John Stones will leave Manchester City at the end of the season following a decade-long stay. The 31-year-old's contract expires at the end of the season and will not be renewed, a move confirmed by both Stones and the club on Tuesday.
Joining from Everton in 2016 as the second signing of the Pep Guardiola era, Stones became integral to City's possession-dominating style. During his time at the Etihad Stadium, he made 293 appearances and scored 19 goals, occasionally playing a hybrid role that saw him push from defense into midfield. He helped the club secure 19 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League.
Manchester City described Stones as the embodiment of Guardiola's City, praising his wonderful technique, sublime passing range, superb work rate, and astute reading of the game. Reflecting on his departure, Stones stated on Instagram that all good things must come to an end, calling his experience the greatest and noting that he lived all his dreams out.
While injury problems in recent seasons have seen him lose his first-choice status, Stones remains in the England squad and is expected to play in the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, provided he remains fit. Additionally, City recently announced that captain Bernardo Silva will also be leaving at the end of the season after nine years with the team.
