Jovenel Moïse, 53, was fatally shot at his private residence on July 7, 2021. The assassination was carried out by a hired group of about 20 military-trained Colombian mercenaries, while his security detail did not intervene to protect him. The killing sparked chaos and shocked the troubled Caribbean country.
Eighteen suspects arrested in association with the killing were flown out of Haiti to the United States on a military plane on Sunday. U.S. District Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Jason Reding Quiñones confirmed the transfer as the suspects awaited extradition.
The suspects will face trial in a federal court in Florida for orchestrating the transnational plot to kill Moïse from U.S. soil. This development marks the end of a drawn-out judicial process in Haiti.
Other suspects remaining in Haiti awaiting trial include more than a dozen Colombian soldiers, a former Haitian police officer, and a former Haiti Ministry of Justice employee.
