Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced on Tuesday that the Trump administration is abandoning plans for a nearly $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund. Speaking before the House Appropriations Committee, Blanche confirmed that the Department of Justice will not move forward with the program.
The fund was intended to compensate allies of President Donald Trump and others who believed they had been the subject of government abuse or had been unjustly investigated and prosecuted. The controversial idea had been championed by some MAGA supporters.
The decision follows a rare backlash from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers, including Republican senators. Additionally, the program had faced setbacks in the courts.
Confirming the administration's retreat from the initiative, Blanche told lawmakers, "We are not moving forward with the fund. Period."
