A long and dangerous heatwave is expected to blast a large swath of the central and eastern United States this week. Temperatures are climbing into the 90s and 100s ahead of Fourth of July and World Cup festivities.
The National Weather Service warns that temperatures will feel even hotter due to arriving high humidity, which is pushing heat index values well above 100 degrees. Over the weekend, more than 130 million Americans in southern and Great Plains states were under moderate to severe heat risk.
Parts of the U.S., especially Phoenix, central Texas, and much of the Southwest, were already experiencing temperatures around 100 degrees on Sunday. Additionally, severe wildfire conditions are developing across much of the West as new fires pop up across the region.
