Serbia President Aleksandar Vucic announced at a pro-government rally in Belgrade that he will resign from his post within a couple of weeks. This move comes as the populist leader seeks to help his political party win early elections expected later this year.
By resigning, Vucic could potentially stay in power as prime minister if his party prevails in the ballot. His second and last mandate was originally set to expire in mid-2027.
The announcement follows months of pressure from anti-government and anti-corruption protests that have swept across the country. These youth-led demonstrations, primarily driven by students, have continued for a year-and-a-half and specifically called for snap general elections.
