Google Maps changes Lake Ontario to Lake America for US users

internet

Google has updated its maps application to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America for users in the United States. The change, which rolled out on Saturday, follows an executive order from US President Donald Trump.

While US users see the new name, people in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario, a name that has stood for more than 400 years. Those accessing the maps from outside the two countries will see both names. This implementation is similar to a change Google made for the Gulf of Mexico last year.

The name change has extended to some Canadian government websites that pull data from Google Maps. In response, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has erected a billboard on the lake's shore to make his position clear. Meanwhile, official US government maps are still waiting to reflect the change.
