Amazon has agreed to acquire satellite operator Globalstar in a deal valued at approximately $11.57 billion. The acquisition, subject to regulatory approval, will bolster Amazon’s satellite business as it aims to compete with Elon Musk’s Starlink.

The deal provides Amazon with access to Globalstar’s network of two dozen satellites, along with crucial spectrum, infrastructure, and operational expertise. This is expected to accelerate the launch of direct-to-device satellite services, currently planned for 2028.

A separate agreement has also been reached with Apple, ensuring Amazon Leo will continue powering satellite features on iPhone and Apple Watch. The acquisition compresses years of development, furthering Amazon’s ambitions in the satellite communications sector.

Globalstar is known for powering Apple’s “Emergency SOS” feature, and this move allows Amazon’s network to offer direct-to-device connections.
