Tens of thousands of protesters marched through central London on Saturday in a major demonstration against the far right, weeks before key elections. The event, organized by the Together Alliance – a coalition of hundreds of groups including over 100 charities, campaign groups and trade unions – was billed as the largest anti-far-right march in British history.
The march began at midday, with participants travelling from across the country, including coaches from Manchester. Demonstrators moved from Park Lane to Trafalgar Square, expressing opposition to far-right politics and specifically decrying the Reform UK party and Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage, who are currently leading in opinion polls.
Organisers claimed half a million people attended, while police estimated the turnout to be around 50,000, acknowledging the difficulty in accurately counting the spread-out crowd. The Together Alliance formed in reaction to growing far-right sentiment following a demonstration last September.
