Gunmen have abducted secondary school students and other travellers in central Nigeria's Benue state. The region's governor reported the incident late Thursday.

The students were heading to university entrance examinations at the time of the kidnapping. This marks the first reported student abduction this year.

While the governor did not specify the exact number of those kidnapped, local media reports indicate that 17 people were taken. The incident comes amid a surge in violence in different parts of the country.
