Frank Beard, the drummer for the Texas boogie-rock trio ZZ Top, has died at the age of 77. A spokesperson for the band confirmed that Beard passed away on Monday, August 17, in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, with family members by his side.
As the only member of the power trio without a beard, Beard propelled the band’s blend of boogie, Southern rock, and blues for more than a half-century. Having played with the band for 56 years, he kept the tempo for some of their biggest hits, including Sharp Dressed Man, Legs, and Gimme All Your Lovin.
In a statement, Billy Gibbons said that he and Elwood lost a great friend and collaborator. Gibbons described Beard as a true son of Texas and one of the most naturally innovative drummers the world has lost.
