The European Commission unveiled a technological sovereignty package on Wednesday, as the 27-nation bloc seeks to promote European-based alternatives to foreign Big Tech companies and hardware. The strategy is designed to reduce the region's reliance on American and Asian firms across critical sectors.
The sweeping plan targets the expansion of domestic technology supply chains, specifically focusing on semiconductors, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data centers. By building these ecosystems, European Union leaders aim to ensure the region retains control and resists foreign interference.
The package consists of four measures, including a new act to bolster advanced chip manufacturing and homegrown cloud computing. Additionally, draft laws would allow the Commission to override chip supply contracts and keep US providers away from sensitive government data.
