Cuba's state-owned grid operator reported that the island's electricity grid collapsed late Sunday, plunging the country into darkness. This outage follows a weekend of outages and three nationwide blackouts that occurred in July.
The power failure comes as a US-imposed oil blockade and energy embargo cripple the island's already ageing energy infrastructure. These measures have halted regular deliveries of fuel for power stations, leading to fuel shortages.
Cuba is currently reeling from its worst economic crisis in decades, a situation that has been made worse by the US fuel blockade.
