Brazil has denied visa requests for two senior U.S. State Department officials from the Trump administration who planned to travel to the country next week. The delegation included Assistant Secretary Riley M. Barnes from the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, as well as Deputy Assistant Secretary Samuel Samson.
The Brazilian government refused the visas over concerns that the officials planned to cast doubt on the integrity and security of the country's electronic voting systems. Authorities viewed the U.S. plan as an attempt to shape the results of the upcoming presidential election and regarded the visit as election interference.
These events come ahead of the October 4 presidential election, in which incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will contend with Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, an ally of Donald Trump. This latest development has added to deepening political tensions between Brazil and the United States.
