The United States removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism on Monday, rescinding a decades-old designation that came with severe economic restrictions.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the action will help foster additional investment in Syria to promote political and economic stability. The governor of Syria's central bank hailed the decision as a historic step, noting that the previous designation had severely impeded investment and represented the last major impediment to investing in the country.
Additionally, Washington rescinded the designation of HTS, formerly led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, as a terrorist organisation. These moves occur as Washington deepens ties to the new Syrian government.
