German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on Sunday for an unannounced visit to demonstrate support for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukraine. The surprise trip comes amid escalating Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and follows a warning from Russia for foreigners and diplomats to leave the capital ahead of massive new airstrikes.
Shortly after Merz arrived at the central railway station, Russian forces struck the city's North Bridge, located approximately 20 minutes away. Sirens rang across the city as smoke rose from the Dnieper River bridge. While a large hole was left in the roadway, traffic has since resumed slowly. This attack follows a drone strike on another bridge the previous day, as Ukrainians steel themselves for an autumn blitz and a tough winter.
Merz, who was accompanied by CEOs from German defense companies, stated that Ukraine can rely on Germany during these decisive weeks. He also warned that the Western alliance could be targeted by Russia if it is not stopped.
The Chancellor is expected to announce a new raft of support measures, including the release of 1 billion euros in military aid and 350 million euros for repairs in the energy sector. Additionally, plans are being discussed for the joint production of interceptor drones.
