Meta's Louisiana data center cost to exceed $50 billion

Meta is expanding its Hyperion data center supercluster in Richland Parish, Louisiana, to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity to support its artificial intelligence ambitions. The project's cost has risen to over $50 billion, an amount that has quintupled since 2024.

The company has committed an additional $40 billion to the sprawling campus, pushing the total expected investment for the site beyond $250 billion. This scale-up is part of Meta's effort to grow its artificial intelligence computing footprint.

Since breaking ground in December 2024, Meta has provided more than $1.6 billion in contracts to local Louisiana businesses. In a parish of 20,000 people, the project has made some residents a fortune while pricing others out of their homes.

While Meta states it is covering its own power costs, critics warn that local residents could still face costs.
