Britain Battles Unprecedented Meningitis Outbreak
An outbreak of meningococcal disease has struck Britain, with health officials warning of an “unprecedented” situation following the deaths of two students. Fifteen cases have been reported across the country so far. Investigations have linked many of the cases to a nightclub in Canterbury, a city popular with students at the University of Kent. The health security agency confirmed notification of the 15 cases, including the fatalities. Meningitis is an infection that impacts the membranes protecting the brain and spinal cord. Authorities are currently focused on the Canterbury nightclub as the source of the outbreak.
