Johnson & Johnson announced on Monday that it has reached a proposed $5.5 billion settlement to resolve tens of thousands of lawsuits alleging its baby powder and other talc products caused ovarian cancer. This landmark deal is intended to end a contentious legal battle that has dogged the company for a decade.
The commitment covers approximately 76,000 claims, representing nearly all of the remaining talc claims against the company. This includes cases consolidated in a federal court in New Jersey as well as related cases in state court.
The proposed settlement aims to close the years-long litigation and tie up the remaining lawsuits claiming that the company's talcum powder products caused cancer.
