Waymo recalls nearly 4,000 robotaxis for entering freeway construction zones

Waymo is recalling thousands of its robotaxis to address a software issue affecting certain fifth-generation automated driving systems.

The recall follows multiple incidents in which the autonomous vehicles failed to recognize ramp-closure signs. As a result, the cars entered and drove at speed through freeway construction zones.

The company has identified at least 13 instances where its robotaxis drove into highway sections closed for construction. Waymo implemented the recall to fix the underlying software issues responsible for these events.
