President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will step down from her role at the end of August. The president shared the news on social media, stating that Leavitt is departing to spend more time with her family.
Leavitt, who made history as the youngest White House press secretary ever, gave birth to a daughter, Viviana, in May. This was her second child, and she had returned from maternity leave last month.
Having served as a press aide during Trump's first term, Leavitt has been one of the most visible advocates of the Make America Great Again movement. President Trump hailed her as one of his most trusted aides and a prominent adviser as the administration heads towards November's midterm elections.
Although she is leaving her position as top spokesperson, Trump stated that Leavitt will continue to serve as one of his top outside advisers and remain an influential voice within the Republican Party.
