Lebanese authorities extradited a former senior Syrian army officer to Damascus on Wednesday. According to Syria's Interior Ministry, the officer faces charges including murder and torture.
This marks the first handover of an Assad-era military officer by Lebanon since the government of former President Bashar al-Assad was toppled in 2024. It is the first transfer from Lebanon involving a Syrian military officer who fled after the government fell.
The move comes as the new Syrian government, led by interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa, looks to hold senior members of the former regime accountable for crimes committed during the country’s civil war, which killed hundreds of thousands of people.
Other figures connected to the former Syrian regime remain in Lebanon but risk being returned.
