France has implemented a new law targeting ultra-fast fashion to curb the industry's environmental and local economic impacts. The legislation, which came into effect on Tuesday, imposes fees on certain items that will eventually reach nearly 20 euros per garment.
The law targets major Asian e-commerce platforms, including Shein and Temu. China has called on France to abandon the law, describing the measures as clearly discriminatory.
Beijing has threatened unspecified measures in response to the environmental penalties. However, a source at France's Foreign Trade and Attractiveness Office, part of the Foreign Ministry, stated that the claims of discrimination are false.
