Yordan Alvarez made Major League Baseball history on Friday night during the Houston Astros' 10-8 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Alvarez became the first player in MLB history to hit both a grand slam and a multi-run home run in the first inning of a game.
During a nine-run first inning, the left-handed designated hitter first drove in two runs with an opposite-field homer. He later cleared the bases with a two-out shot to center field. These two homers earned Alvarez six RBIs and made him the third player in Houston history to hit two home runs in a single inning.
With these two home runs, the 28-year-old Cuban tied Philadelphia's Kyle Schwarber for the MLB lead at 24. Alvarez is only the eighth player to hit a grand slam and a multi-run homer in any inning, and the first to do so since 2012.
A three-time All-Star and the 2019 AL rookie of the year, Alvarez has a history of postseason success. He was the AL Championship Series MVP in 2021 and led the Astros with six RBIs during their World Series win the following year.
