Qatar's Assim Madibo banned for 5 matches after breaking leg of Canada's Kone

Canada secured its first World Cup victory with a 6-0 win over Qatar in Vancouver last Thursday. However, the match was overshadowed by a serious injury to Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné, who suffered a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg. Koné was tackled from behind in the 51st minute by Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo, who was issued a straight red card for the challenge. Koné was taken off the pitch on a stretcher and later underwent surgery.

On Wednesday, the FIFA disciplinary committee handed Madibo a five-match ban for serious foul play. The decision is subject to appeal to the FIFA Appeal Committee. While significant, the ban is not the largest issued by FIFA at a World Cup; Uruguay striker Luis Suarez received a nine-match suspension in 2014, and Italy defender Mauro Tassotti was suspended for eight games in 1994.

Following the incident, Madibo apologized in person to Koné. Qatar's sports minister and Madibo also visited the injured midfielder in the hospital, where they were received by the President of the Canadian Soccer Association. The Qatar Football Association stated the visit reflected the spirit of sportsmanship and strong relationships off the field. Koné later posted on Instagram expressing his gratitude to everyone who reached out and kept him in their prayers.

Qatar is scheduled to play its final group match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, while tournament co-hosts Canada will face Switzerland.
