More than 1,800 civilians have been killed in Burkina Faso since 2023, according to a new report. The findings indicate government and allied forces have killed more than twice as many civilians as Islamist militants during this period.

Human Rights Watch documented numerous incidents and alleges that security forces and allied militias are “more brutal and violent” than militant groups. The report calls for investigations into potential war crimes committed by all parties involved in the conflict.

The Fulani ethnic group has been identified as one of the targets of violence. Human Rights Watch is urging prosecutors at the International Criminal Court to investigate the alleged abuses.
