Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi rebels announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia on Monday. A military spokesperson stated in a televised speech that the naval embargo is effective immediately.
The Houthi militia stated the move is based on the principle of "an eye for an eye." The group accused Saudi Arabia of maintaining a years-long blockade and conducting a recent attack on Sanaa International Airport, describing the kingdom's actions as an "aggressive siege."
Saudi Arabia has condemned these allegations, rejecting claims that the kingdom has been besieging the Yemeni people.
The embargo threatens to escalate regional conflict and disrupt global trade and energy supplies beyond the Gulf. By targeting a crucial choke point in the Red Sea, the blockade puts one of the world's busiest shipping lanes at risk and threatens the flow of millions of barrels of oil exported by Saudi Arabia.
