science natural disasters

A meteor exploded over the northeastern United States on Saturday afternoon, triggering a loud boom and ground shaking felt across Massachusetts. The fireball broke up over northeastern Massachusetts and southeastern New Hampshire just after 2 p.m. ET.

Nasa reported that the meteor was traveling at 75,000 miles per hour at an altitude of 40 miles when it broke apart. The resulting blast was equivalent to 300 tons of TNT. According to the American Meteor Society, the object was approximately 3 feet wide as it entered the atmosphere near the Massachusetts and New Hampshire border.

Dozens of people across the Northeast reported seeing the fireball. The explosion, which occurred just off the coast of Massachusetts, created booms that echoed over the region, with meteorologists confirming the loud blast was likely caused by the meteor.
