A US-brokered localized ceasefire in Ukraine's southern Kherson region ended Sunday night after Russia refused to extend the agreement. The six-day pause in fighting, which began on Tuesday, marked the longest local truce since the full-scale invasion in 2022.
The pause enabled a humanitarian mission to the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky. As the ceasefire neared expiry on Sunday, the Ukrainian military evacuated 167 people from threatened areas of the southern Kherson region, following the earlier removal of busloads of residents from Oleshky.
No violations were reported in the Kherson region during the truce, but Moscow and Kyiv continued strikes elsewhere. Russia targeted energy infrastructure in at least four other regions. As the war enters its fifth year, Russia continues to fire drones and rockets from across the Dnipro River, despite the Ukrainian army having regained the city in November of that year.
