US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have renewed suggestions of potential military intervention in Cuba. This threat follows the administration's announcement of criminal charges against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, who was indicted on terrorism charges.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump described the indictment as a very big moment. While he previously suggested that further escalation was unnecessary after the charges were announced, he noted that while previous presidents have considered intervening in Cuba for decades, he might be the one to finally take direct action. However, he dismissed plans for military action similar to those seen in Venezuela in recent months.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the White House is focused on toppling Cuba's socialist government to address national security risks. Although Rubio indicated that Washington remains open to talks, he noted that the likelihood of a negotiated agreement is not high. He urged Havana to strike a deal before it is too late, stressing that the Cuban government will not be able to outwait the Trump administration.
