Uber Technologies Inc. is laying off approximately 3,300 employees, representing about 10% of its global workforce. This restructuring is intended to make the company simpler and faster by reducing management layers and streamlining team structures.
CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stated that the company is betting on a leaner organization. The cuts will allow Uber to reallocate spending and invest more in its ride-sharing, delivery, and robotaxi divisions as it braces for rising robotaxi competition.
As part of the overhaul, Uber is cutting small teams by nearly half and requesting that more employees return to the office. Only about 1% of the workforce will be allowed to continue working remotely.
These layoffs are the company's largest since May 2020, when the pandemic forced Uber to shed 6,700 jobs.
