European confidence in the United States as a security partner has reached a historic low. According to a survey published Wednesday by the European Council on Foreign Relations, only 11% of people across 15 countries view the U.S. as an ally. This represents a significant decline from 16% six months ago and 22% in November 2024.
The findings reveal deep European distrust, with majorities in all surveyed countries doubting that the U.S. would come to their aid in the event of an attack. Trust in the United States has plummeted since Donald Trump returned to the White House.
A growing number of Europeans now perceive the U.S. as a rival or an adversary, a trend particularly evident in Denmark, France, Spain, and Switzerland. These results were released ahead of critical G7 and Nato summits scheduled to take place in France and Turkey.
